The Industrial Microscopy Specialization is a program of study for scientists who are currently employed in a materials sciences laboratory looking to expand their microscopy skills as they relate to materials analysis, or for those who are interested in pursuing a career in industrial microscopy.
The program consists of attending four standard Hooke College of Applied Sciences (HCAS) courses with hands-on instruction, each followed by 40 hours of practicum study characterizing unknown samples. Upon successful completion of each course and practicum, students who receive a grade of 90% or better will be issued a certificate of completion for each course.
After finishing the four courses, students complete a Capstone Project, which is a project that requires students to characterize and identify samples by integrating all of the skills learned during the four courses taken for the program. Those students who successfully complete the four courses and associated practicums, and a Capstone Project, earn an Industrial Microscopy Specialization.
The program requires two payments of $4,497.50. The first payment is due prior to the first course, and the balance is due prior to the start of the third course.
There are a couple of choices for hotels that have a special Hooke College discount.
The program is designed to be flexible and meet the needs of a variety of students and lifestyles. Based on your availability to participate in scheduled courses, the completion time will range between six and 18 months.
You can schedule a time during our regular business hours following the hands-on portion of the course to use instrumentation necessary to complete the practicum session.
No, you can attend courses in any order.
40% is earned as outlined by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) guidelines; participation, attendance, and completion of labs and assignments. Class engagement, appropriate participation in discussion, completion of hands-on activities, and 100% attendance is expected from all students.
20% is earned via a formative assessment by HCAS staff.
40% is earned via an assessment of the practicum project.
You receive an IACET certificate of completion, but may be required to repeat the practicum session.
The practicum project usually consists of a set of unknown samples that will be characterized by the student based on the theories and techniques taught in the hands-on portion of the course.
The practicum project is due four weeks after the completion of the hands-on course. The practicum project deadline will be set by the course instructor.
The Capstone Project requires you to characterize and identify samples by integrating all of the skills learned during the four courses taken for the specialization.
At the conclusion of each of the hands-on courses you will receive an IACET certificate, the gold standard in continuing education.
Upon receiving a grade of 90% or higher on the four follow-on practicum sessions and Capstone Project, you will receive a certificate indicating that you have earned an Industrial Microscopy Specialization.
Yes. We will send you practicum samples to identify, and after you present your results the course will be applied to the Industrial Microscopy Specialization, for an additional charge of $229.
The prerequisites are listed individually and are available on the Hooke College website. Generally, a college level background in science would be helpful.
