Hooke College of Applied Sciences Announces 2014 Microscopy Courses

Unique Blended Learning Format Increases Student Proficiency

Westmont, IL (August 30, 2013) – Hooke College of Applied Sciences announced its 2014 schedule of microscopy courses, available online at www.hookecollege.com/schedule.

Hooke College offers microscopy training courses related to the following topics: particle identification, light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, fiber identification, infrared microscopy, Raman microspectroscopy, gunshot residue identification, and sample preparation. Microscopy training courses are held year-round in the classroom laboratories at the Hooke College learning center in Westmont, Illinois.

Many of the courses taught at Hooke College utilize a unique blended learning format known as web-classroom-web training. In this three-pronged instruction model, students complete online modules before class convenes, participate in hands-on instructor-led training at Hooke College, then attend post-course online workshops that reinforce the classroom learning. This training method maximizes hands-on instrument time available to every student and helps them immediately apply their skills in their own workplace.

An employee from a pharmaceutical company who attended a recent sample preparation course said, “The exercises performed during class definitely gave me confidence. Most recently, I applied the cross-sectioning techniques to the amazement of my staff. I sliced a 20 micron particle like a loaf of bread.”

Charles Zona, Hooke College’s vice president and dean, said, “We maintain a very low student-to-teacher ratio in our courses, and want our students to arrive in class ready to make the most of their hands-on training sessions. The pre-course materials in our blended learning model allow students additional time to gain an understanding of unfamiliar concepts, while the post-course sessions strengthen their skills and confidence.”

Hooke College instructors are subject matter experts in their field and practicing scientists. The instructors deliver a hands-on learning experience that provides each student with the knowledge, critical thinking, and practical techniques necessary to quickly put their new skills to use on the job.

In addition to its scheduled courses, Hooke College collaborates with companies to develop specialized custom courses geared towards the needs of their technicians and scientists.
