John Gustav Delly Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
On September 27, 1965, after exhausting his childhood chemistry set; serving his country as an Army medic during the Korean Conflict; earning a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees; working as a taxidermist at the Field Museum, Chicago; and teaching high school chemistry, biology and English classes; John Gustav Delly joined the scientific staff of McCrone Associates. In addition to his passion for the microscope, developing analytical techniques, and supervising contaminant identification research, John was also a lead instructor for McCrone Research Institute.
In January of 1987, when McCrone Associates and McCrone Microscopes & Accessories moved from Chicago to Westmont, John remained at McCrone Research Institute to continue expanding the minds and skills of growing microscopists. We were excited to welcome him back to McCrone Associates as a scientific advisor in 2003.
John has made extraordinary contributions to the world of microscopy during his 50 year career with The McCrone Group. He has authored more than 500 publications including The Particle Atlas, The Particle Analyst, Photography Through the Microscope, and, most recently, Essentials of Polarized Light Microscopy; managed countless industrial projects; developed new analytical techniques; and taught hundreds of microscopy related courses. Amazingly, he found time for his family and other passions such as stamp collecting, scuba diving, calligraphy, marksmanship, and ballet—of course these were all somehow related to microscopy.
On April 1, 2015, The McCrone Group presented John with a Lifetime Achievement Award. We sincerely thank John for 50 years of contributions and dedication to microscopy.

As a young boy, my uncle Walter often invited me to the lab. I vividly remember John and his big microscope, his curiosity and intellectual intensity, but most of all I remember his kindness and generous human spirit. I never missed making a bee-line to John's office!
