4+ YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
Mak joined McCrone Associates’ electron optics group in May, 2017, where he specializes in materials characterization and phase identification via a combination of XRD, SEM, EDS, and TEM. He designs and conducts experiments that will help clients better understand or solve specific problems such as product contamination, product specifications failure, and unknown manufacturing or processing issues. Prior to working at MA, Mak was a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where he conducted research in nanotechnology and materials engineering. His areas of study included the formation of gas-condensed nanoparticles and clusters within a plasma, and the kinetics and thermodynamics of binary and ternary transition metal systems. Mak’s research helped identify the materials selection parameters that can lead to core-shell nanoparticle formation directly from the gas phase. His research depended heavily on analytical work conducted in a scanning transmission electron microscope (S/TEM) and he developed a passion for electron microscopy as a postdoc and grad student. He also served as the supervisor of a dualbeam FIB/SEM in the University of Nebraska’s Nano-Engineering Research Core Facility while he was a postdoc, and trained 50+ grad students and postdocs on several applications.
