15+ YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
Olivia joined McCrone Associates as a senior research scientist and project leader in the spring of 2024. She is a trained geologist, and her expertise is in microstructure characterization, and chemical and phase analysis. Her proficiency includes scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), focused ion beam (FIB), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
Prior to coming to McCrone, Olivia worked at the University of Illinois (Chicago) in the Research Resources Center at the Electron Microscopy Core facility. She spent 10 years teaching electron microscopy skills, training customers, sharpening her abilities, and becoming an effective leader. She collaborated with clients from diverse backgrounds studying biological materials, ceramics, graphene, batteries and lithium batteries, metals, polymers and hydrophilic polymers, and semiconductors and conductors. Olivia was the first woman to hold the assistant director role at the Core facility.
During her higher education, Olivia studied the preservation of microscopic shock deformation features derived from the 1.85Ga Sudbury Impact basin, Canada. Through her research she established a new and successful approach in identifying terrestrial impact structures. For this work, Olivia was awarded the Eugene M. Shoemaker Impact Cratering Award in 2011 and also received an NSFA/NASA scholarship.
