The McCrone Group Announces three Summer Camps for High School and Middle School Science Teachers and Aspiring Science Students
THE McCRONE GROUP ANNOUNCES THREE SUMMER CAMPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHERS AND ASPIRING SCIENCE STUDENTS
WESTMONT, IL (May 19, 2008) – The McCrone Group Inc., internationally recognized as a world leader in microanalysis and the nation’s Premier Microscopy Resource, announced today it is offering three summer workshops at its College of Microscopy. The College of Microscopy’s 2008 summer sessions include a Microscopy Camp and a Forensics Camp for high school and middle school science teachers and a Materials Camp for advance placement (AP) high school students. Each teacher participating in the College of Microscopy’s Microscopy Camp will receive a microscope for their own classroom use.
“We are very excited to offer three very distinctive summer camps in 2008 designed to enhance the level of science education and competence,” Donald A. Brooks, President & CEO, The McCrone Group, said. “Last year, we tested two pilot camps and the interest and success of this model convinced us to continue with three unique educational camps this year. Our commitment to science education extends beyond a one-time event and these camps permit a deeper and much broader learning experience for the teachers and students alike,” he added.
The College of Microscopy’s Microscopy Camp for 20 high school and middle school science teachers will be held on June 23 to 27. The Camp is designed to help high school and middle school science teachers understand and develop microscopy skills, lessons, and experiments to use in their classrooms. Microscopy Camp students learn time-honored and highly specialized microscopy methods that can successfully be applied to a wide variety of secondary school science lessons.
The Microscopy Camp requires a $100.00 lab fee and each science teacher selected to participate will receive a microscope, digital camera, software and five days of intense application instruction.
The College of Microscopy’s Forensic Camp is also for 20 high school and middle school science teachers and will be held August 4 to 8. The Camp is designed to help high school and middle school science teachers develop forensic science lessons to use in their classrooms. Forensic Camp students learn time-honored and specialized forensic science methods that can be applied to a wide variety of secondary school science lessons. Some of the major topics that will be developed and practiced during Forensic Camp include crime scenes, trace evidence, DNA, Questioned Documents, Anthropology and Entomology.

The College of Microscopy’s Materials Camp for eight high school students will be held on June 24 to 26. This Materials Camp will be offered through ASM International, The Materials Information Society. Advance Placement high school juniors and seniors with proven aptitudes in science and math can complete an application to the Materials Camp at: http://asmcommunity.asminternational.org
The three-day Materials Camp for high school juniors and seniors features highly interactive, lab-based activities tailored to individual interest areas. Students will learn how to use sophisticated materials science tools such as metallography, mechanical testing, light microscopy, fractography, scanning electron microscopy, image analysis and chemical analysis.

Zona, Vice President and Dean of the College said. “At these three camps we will offer the educators and aspiring scientists a valuable and unique combination of theoretical and practical hands-on experience,” Zona added.
The College of Microscopy specializes in training materials scientists, crime lab personnel, First Responders, researchers, technicians, and educators how to locate and identify unknown or suspect materials using modern microscopy techniques such as light microscopy, electron microscopy, and micro-FTIR/Raman spectroscopy.
