20+ YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
Gretchen joined McCrone Associates as a senior research chemist in 1995. She came to McCrone Associates following her Ph.D. in Archaeological Chemistry from the University of London and a fellowship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
She is responsible for chemical analysis using infrared spectroscopy, Raman microspectroscopy, gas and liquid chromatography, polarized light microscopy and microchemical techniques. She has problem solving experience in a wide variety of industries including pharmaceutical, paints and coatings, electronics, forensic, polymers and metals. Types of projects include identification of surface defects and adhesion failures in automotive and other paints, identification of foreign matter in pharmaceutical products, analysis of contaminants in petroleum products, and evaluation of coatings/corrosion/stains on metal surfaces. Other chemical analyses involve polymer and ink outgassing and residual solvent analysis. Her research interests are in art and archaeological materials identification and conservation research.
