College of Microscopy expands with two new courses for Conservation Professionals
COLLEGE OF MICROSCOPY EXPANDS WITH TWO NEW COURSES FOR CONSERVATION PROFESSIONALS

WESTMONT, IL (July 28, 2008) – The McCrone Group Inc., internationally recognized as a world leader in microanalysis and the nation’s Premier Microscopy Resource, announced today that its College of Microscopy and learning center in Westmont, Illinois will offer two new courses uniquely developed to meet the needs of the conservation professional. The College of Microscopy has the largest array of advanced modern microscopy instrumentation within a single location in the United States.
The first new course, “Chemistry for Conservators” is a week-long intensive chemistry review to refresh a student’s knowledge of chemical concepts and applications. This course is an ideal introduction to chemistry for students interested in pursuing a career in conservation. The course is scheduled for September 22 – 26, 2008. Students successfully completing the course requirements are awarded a certificate of completion and 3.5 CEU credits.
The second new course, “Laboratory Safety” serves as condensed introduction and hands-on application to laboratory safety for the non-scientist. The one-day course is designed to introduce students to the potential hazards and risks involved in working in a laboratory, handling chemicals and operating equipment, including how to prevent laboratory accidents and how to minimize exposure to potential hazards. The course is scheduled for two dates, September 12 and 29, 2008. Students successfully completing course requirements are awarded a certificate of completion and 0.5 CEU credits.
“We heard from working conservation professionals that there is a real need for these courses,” said Kathy A. Cyr, Director of Program Development, College of Microscopy. “And, in fact, we have developed the program based upon conversation with several conservationists. By expanding our course offerings, we are better preparing individuals to become leaders in this field,” Cyr added.

The College of Microscopy specializes in training materials scientists, crime lab personnel, First Responders, researchers, technicians, conservationists, and educators how to characterize and identify unknown or suspect materials using modern microscopy techniques such as light microscopy, electron microscopy, and micro-FTIR/Raman spectroscopy.
Today, the College of Microscopy provides the most comprehensive learning and advanced microscopy resources available anywhere in the world.
