Hooke College of Applied Sciences Announces 2015 Microscopy Courses

Westmont, IL (August 11, 2014) — Hooke College of Applied Sciences, a leading microscopy training center, announced its 2015 schedule of microscopy courses. The 2015 course schedule is available online at www.hookecollege.com/courses.

Hooke College offers year-round microscopy and microanalytical training courses, which include the following topics and techniques: particle identification, light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, gunshot residue identification, sample preparation, identification of pharmaceutical contaminants, fiber identification, infrared microscopy, and Raman microspectroscopy. Courses are taught in the classroom laboratories at Hooke College in Westmont, Illinois.

Through a cooperative program with the Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area (ACCA), many Hooke College courses offered during 2015 can be taken for-credit by undergraduate chemistry and biology students.

Charles Zona, vice president and dean, said, “Our 3+1 college students really like the hands-on nature of each course and sharing ideas and experiences with our professional development students from industry.”

Many courses employ a unique blended learning model, using pre-course online activities to introduce concepts and techniques, so that students gain equal understanding before attending classroom sessions. Classroom attendance is followed by post-course online sessions, with assignments—to be completed in the student’s own laboratory—that are designed to support and solidify classroom learning.

A student who attended a recent polarized light microscopy course said, “I continue to be amazed at how much I enjoy being here, in this environment. The commitment to excellence and the science is heady and intoxicating, but the people always seem warm, friendly, and genuine. It is a scientific environment where what one knows and can do is valued. The ambience of the facility, the technology, and the attention to detail from the lab to the lobby to the lawn communicate the passion.”

Hooke College instructors are senior research scientists and world-renowned materials science industry experts who bring solid knowledge and experience to the classroom.
